“ It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations , if you live near one .”— J . R . R . Tolkien

CITY BRIEFLY OF MCKEESPORT BRENTWOOD NEWS
While we don ’ t quite have any live dragons in Brentwood ( which some would call a shame ), Tolkien ’ s quote from The Hobbit certainly rings true . When you plan , you must factor in problems of all shapes and sizes that may crop up as you go along and be ready to face them with the right tools . Whether those are the big , scaly , fire-breathing problems , or the small problems like not having a sword with which to face it , each one might need a different consideration and a varied approach but knowing what those problems are and coming armed to face them are crucial steps in bringing any plan to fruition . Now , our Implementable Comprehensive Plan isn ’ t nearly as exciting as The Hobbit , but when it comes to considering issues big and small , there are certain similarities . The Borough has been working with planning consultant Pashek + MTR to learn what issues and opportunities are the most important for the community to address during the next decade and create effective targeted strategies , with the result being a detailed playbook for getting projects underway and improvements made . Brentwood Borough ’ s residents and business owners are encouraged to visit www . TheBrentwoodPlan . com for details on the project and ways to get involved . The Implementable Plan model that we ’ re using to address these future improvements calls for meaningful , intensive public engagement – to ensure that our plan addresses what people really care about – and detailed deep-dive strategies to make progress on those most important issues . The implementable plan is all about building and sustaining momentum for progress .

This planning effort will be crowd-sourced , as public input will form the foundation of the plan and will help decide which local issues become priorities . Key issues include such topics as supporting and growing local business opportunities , increasing walkability , mitigating traffic problems , resolving parking issues , beautifying neighborhoods , improving environmental assets , future infrastructure needs , stormwater / flooding issues , zoning and code , civic life and events , recreation , or many other areas within the purview of local government that we have the ability to improve and change . As of the time I write this , we have only received around 450 responses on our community survey out of our approximately 10,000 residents . That ’ s only 4.5 percent of Brentwood ’ s whole population , and this is even with the possibility of winning a family pool pass along with having a say in how their community grows ! Between the pandemic , stagflation , a rapidly changing market for food , housing , and energy , and a stock market that ’ s going up and down like a yo-yo , the last few years have made a lot of significant changes to the way that everyone lives their lives . That ’ s a big , scary problem , but on a local government level , there ’ s no slaying that beast . But what we can do is we can start with us . We can solve problems our community has , or we can make something better , or we can start a new project that will improve the Borough for residents , business owners , and visitors alike . What we need to get started on doing that is you . Your input is what makes this whole thing work .
Going back to 1915 when Brentwood was established , it was then an offshoot of Baldwin Township which used to encompass 10,000 acres of land . So , what caused them to file to split off and establish their own community ? They didn ’ t feel that the council they had voted for was listening to them — there wasn ’ t a large amount put towards infrastructure , everything was largely decentralized , and they felt their concerns fell on deaf ears . What then was the first thing they did ? They planned to govern themselves , planned how to file , planned how to hold an election in their little piece of paradise , and when the planning part was done , all it took was the resources and gumption to make it all happen . But then , as now , it all started with the most important resource : community support and feedback . You know what that means ! I ’ m calling on all those Facebook cowboys , keyboard warriors , and those who want their opinions heard ! Take your finger off the “ Comment ” button on Facebook or Twitter and mosey on over to our survey site . We have the survey , we have the outline , and we have the get-up-and-go to make it happen . We just need your opinions to make it work . Be vocal , make yourselves heard on this survey , and don ’ t hold back because good honest feedback is how we make our community stronger and better-poised to succeed in the years to come . Go to www . yourbrentwoodplan . com and lend your voice to make a difference in our community . We ’ re counting on you !
