Artis Senior Living
Brings Compassionate
Memory Care to the
South Hills
A
rtis Senior Living opened its doors to the South Hills
community in late April. The all-new memory care
community is built on more than 20 years’ experience
creating supportive environments for those living
with memory loss. Artis Senior Living is a place where your loved
one will truly feel at home with the support of specially trained
care partners.
The Artis philosophy and mission is to create positive
partnerships with the residents, their families and the associates.
The “A” in Artis stands for “ability to have voice.”
“Dementia takes so much away from our residents; we want
to provide our residents the freedom to define their own days,”
states Executive Director Rebecca Toomey.
Artis Senior Living also has the “I CAN” program, which stands
for “Community Assistance Network.”

“We will partner with
organizations such as churches,
community groups, and local
hospitals to find opportunities
where our residents are able to
make a difference, feel successful,
and have a sense of purpose,”
explains Toomey.
Artis Senior Living of South Hills is
a memory care community of 72 all-
private suites. There are four distinct
neighborhoods, encouraging
residents to move freely within the
enclosed and secure community.
Artis will have planned daily
meaningful programs focusing on daily life and tailored to
individual interests and abilities. There will be a licensed nurse on
staff 24 hours a day, chef-prepared meals served family style, and
enclosed outdoor courtyards and beautiful walking paths.
“Our community is home for our residents,” Toomey says.
“We work with families to
create a partnership profile,
a customized care plan,
which enables us to foster
a partnership with our
residents so that they live
the life they want to live
within a memory-support
community.”
The “T” in Artis stands for
“Treasuring Each Person’s
Uniqueness.” Each resident
has his/her own unique
set of likes, interests, and
desires. For that reason,
when a resident moves
into an Artis community,
he/she is greeted with an
individualized welcome.
It provides a sense of
familiarity in an unfamiliar environment.
Peg Chabala, Director of Partnership Development, adds,
“The resources available to our residents at Artis are broad and
diverse, and focusing on the individual needs of the resident is
key. I feel the four Fs—friendly, functional, forgiving and fun—
are important. I will work closely with families and staff, so that
education and support is consistent and continuous.”
Artis Senior Living of South Hills celebrated its Grand Opening
on April 22. The event was catered by Rania and included
delicious food with a Pittsburgh flair. The directors provided
tours, there was live entertainment, basket raffles, and more.
