WHAT’S NEWS IN BETHEL PARK SOUTH HILLS SENIOR SOFTBALL LOOKING FOR MEMBERS The South Hills Senior Softball League announced that registration is open for its 2019 season. The league is for players 55 years old and up. (Players who are 54 can join at any time during the year they turn 55.) Information and forms for registration are on the league’s website at seniorsoftballleague.com. The league holds practices and games from April through August or early September at fields in South Park and elsewhere in the South Hills. “You’ll feel like a kid again when you play,” says Doug Houston, commissioner of the nonprofit group. “The average player is about 66, and our softball rules are age-appropriate.” Players are chosen for teams each spring in a draft, ensuring that talent is spread more or less evenly among the teams. The league holds a catered picnic at the end of each season. Players come from all over the area, including Baldwin, Bethel Park, Bridgeville, Carnegie, Castle Shannon, Chartiers Valley, Dormont, Mt. Lebanon, Peters Township, South Park, Upper St. Clair, Whitehall and other communities. WOMEN’S GOLF OF MT. The sale is a great place to find that special Mother’s Day gift. SOUTH HILLS CHORALE INVITES YOU TO ‘STAR SPANGLED SPRING’ The South Hills Chorale sings into a “Star Spangled Spring” at 7:30 p.m., April 26 and 27, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2040 Washington Road, Upper St. Clair. The 90 singers from various communities will present an enjoyable program of Broadway, patriotic and American Folk tunes, exuberantly heralding the end of winter and hinting at the coming summer. Audiences can shake the winter doldrums while tapping toes to an “Oklahoma!” medley and “Rhythm of Life” from “Sweet Charity.” The music of Rodgers and Hammerstein continues to inspire, with “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Climb Every Mountain” combined in one dramatic piece. More familiar favorites, including a choral arrangement of “The Star Spangled Banner,” set the stage for spring. icmags.com Currently guided by the talents of music director Philip R. Aley, assistant director Skylar Bunk, and accompanist Nancy Gordon Galluzzo, the South Hills Chorale enjoys a proud 59-year tradition of providing Pittsburgh-area music lovers with opportunities to both sing and hear professional-quality choral music in concert. Tickets are $20 and are available from chorale members, online at www.southhillschorale.org, at the door, or by emailing [email protected]. For more information, call 412.221.9109. BP ELKS LODGE DELIVERS CHRISTMAS JOY TO RESIDENTS AT S/W VETERANS CENTER The Bethel Parks Elks Lodge 2213 delivered a truckload of presents for the residents of the S/W Veterans Center in Pittsburgh for Christmas. The donation was based on a wish list that the residents filled out in early fall. Each resident could list up to five items and the Elks usually provide three or four of them. The project is the lodge’s biggest undertaking each year, and work usually begins early in the year with fundraising and starting to gather presents. The group has a general knowledge of what items are usually wanted and needed by the vets. Since the B.P.O.E. is a nonprofit organization, money to purchase the gifts comes through donations from some Lodge 2213 members, people in the community, and grant money from the B.P.O.E. Grand Lodge in Chicago, IL. Several local groups also volunteer time and service to the effort, such as Dormont V.F.W. Post 694 and Vietnam Veterans Inc. The Elks are already fundraising for Christmas 2019, as total costs of the project typically exceed $7,000. If any organization or family wishes to become part of this holiday outreach program for the vets, pleases contact the Elks at 412.835.7040, or email at [email protected].   ■
