SPANISH STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN STEAM COMMUNITY PROJECT

Students who study Spanish at Independence Middle School worked together in groups of four to participate in a STEAM Community Project.

During the month of December, each group was able to select a Spanish-speaking city and put together a three-part presentation about their city, with a focus on STEAM--Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.
They were charged with putting together a Google Slides Presentation, containing a title slide with the name of their city as well as the name of the group members; and four STEAM-related slides.
For Science, the students had to create a slide about the weather in their city, including temperatures in Farenheit as well as Celsius, and filmed a video of them presenting the weather in Spanish. For Technology, the students used a 3-D printer to create a model of a monument that would typically be at the center of a Spanish city’ s central plaza. They also had to create a Google slide with a picture of the monument that served as the inspiration for their 3-D model, as well as a paragraph about their city’ s plaza.
For Engineering, one student served as the engineer / designer of the city, including creating a grid of their city with streets, a plaza and any other components he or she thought would be in their city, such as a beach or a park. Their Google slide contained a photo of their grid.
For Art, the students created a Google slide of images of the kinds of buildings that would be in their city and where these

buildings would be located. They also made models of 10 different buildings that would be in their city and placed them on the grid. They could use materials such as toilet paper rolls, boxes, construction paper, and cartons to create their model buildings. Some of the buildings included a church, house, restaurant, stadium, hotel, office and supermarket.
For Math, the students combined their Farenheit / Celsius conversions of the high and low temperatures of the weather forecast into the Science slide.
Each member of the group was responsible for one aspect of the STEAM project and they presented their part of the presentation in Spanish to their classmates.
The students were graded on their participation in the project, how well they integrated the STEAM components, and how well they spoke Spanish for their presentation to their classmates. The students in the classroom also had the opportunity to grade the other presentations, rating their visual presentation, the inclusion of all the STEAM elements, their organization and if the presentation made sense to them.
Some of the cities the students studied included Buenos Aires, Argentina; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Madrid, Spain and El Alto, Bolivia.
The students are taught by IMS Spanish Teachers Senora Foster, Senora Schipani and Senorita Marchiano.
