GOVERNMENT FAILS TO INNOVATE WHILE SOME COMPANIES & INDIVIDUALS ARE TRYING TO BRING IMPACT BUT STILL AT A VERY SMALL SCALE LOCAL ARTIST WHO CARES Luke Ching is a Hong Kong artist living in Tai Po, New Territories. He started caring about waste bins and cleaners after seeing a smart “design” done by a cleaner, putting an aluminum tray on top of the ash tray area of the bin to make her work easier. He then started to do different things aiming to raise awareness of the topic including writing a letter and posting it on different waste bins to encourage the public to respect the cleaners, and amending the cracks on bins to prevent cleaners from getting injured etc. 22 Design Change x Design Trust BONAQUA’S WATER STATION In December last year, Bonaqua announced that they will install 300 water station across Hong Kong by end of 2019 in order to reduce one time plastic usage which aligns with Coca Cola’s overall vision “World without Waste”. WATSONS’ PLASTIC BOTTLE RECYCLING MACHINE Earlier this year in January, Watsons Water announced that they will introduce 400 plastic bottle recycling vending machines across Hong Kong. Users will get up to $50 online cash coupon from Watson’s partners for example Park n Shop after they reach a certain numbers of points and sign up to their membership. This initiative is not limited to Watsons plastic bottles, but open to all bottles from all beverage brands that can be recycled. INSIDE OUT APPROACH FROM GOVERNMENT Earlier this year in January, Watson Water announced that they will in February, together with the Hong Kong Government start a trial for the new solar compactor trash can, placing them in 12 different locations across Hong Kong. No user research was conducted before the launch and no interviews were conducted to capture feedback. The Government then decided to stop the trial this year after investing $700K, saying there are areas that still need to be improved. Design Change x Design Tr u st 23
