educational workshops led entirely by the student leadership team. These sessions focused on awareness and reporting of
workplace violence against nurses, providing valuable opportunities for participants to practice newly acquired skills in a virtual environment, develop effective communication techniques, enhance mentoring abilities, and strengthen organizational skills crucial for nursing leadership.
The culmination of these efforts was evident during the Tennessee Nurses Association( TNA) Day on the Hill in February 2025. Attending this important event, 11 SNA leaders, accompanied by advisors, showcased their professional growth and advocacy skills. Students had the unique opportunity to engage directly with state senators, advocating for stricter laws and promoting de-escalation education for nursing students and practicing nurses.
Sustaining Growth
Emphasizing sustainability, Leadership Development Day took place again on August 15,
2025, providing valuable opportunities for students to grow as NSNA leaders. In addition, with the availability of funds through the Student Affairs Office, we are planning ongoing representation at TNA Day on the Hill in February 2026.
This experience has been transformative for many participants, demonstrating the tangible impact they can have on the future of nursing. As one student reflected, " This experience opened my eyes to the difference we can make as future nurses. I now feel empowered to speak up and advocate for the safety of myself and my colleagues."
The Marilyn Bagwell Leadership Development Grant has been instrumental in fostering professional growth, confidence, and learning related to nurse safety and advocacy. By equipping students with the knowledge and skills to address workplace violence, Columbia State Community College is preparing future nurses to be safer and more effective advocates throughout their careers. Through continued mentorship and leadership development, these initiatives are poised to have a lasting impact on students ' careers and the future of nursing.
Thanks to the grant, students and future nurses are focused on making a difference.
