UNC – Chapel Hill Association of Nursing Students
On October 12, the UNC – Chapel Hill Association of Nursing Students turned the Medical Biomolecular Research Building into a sea of pink for its annual Pink Heels breast cancer awareness and fundraising celebration. The afternoon mixed education and joy: inspiring guest speakers, live dance performances, and hands-on stations for screening education alongside tie-dye, pumpkin painting, bracelet making, and the crowd-favorite Bling the Bra competition. New participation incentives helped boost engagement— attendees could earn Campus Life Experience credit, ANS members collected points— and every dollar raised supported the Kathleen Boyd Fund for Metastatic Breast Cancer through the UNC Lineberger Power of Pink campaign. Thanks to campus and community generosity, Pink Heels brought in more than $ 23,000 for metastatic breast cancer research this year. As co-advisor Nancy Jo Thompson, DNP, MSN-Ed, RN, put it, what started five years ago as a small advocacy idea has grown into“ a campus-wide movement” that advances awareness, supports research, and reflects the Breakthrough to Nursing mission— compassion, equity, and leadership in action.
