I don ’ t “ study .” Instead , I set aside two hours every day to do work for class , and when I finish my assignment within that window , I browse through the content . I find that I ’ m not stressed come test time and I have a better understanding of the content as I ’ ve had more time overall to digest it . Brian Stern , Student Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences , Lancaster , PA
This tip works for general disease / condition processes . I write the disease or condition at the top of a blank page and then focus on basic pathology ( put it in my own words ) and focus on assessments , RN interventions , treatments , and patient education . I look at these sheets every day and try and explain it out loud to someone to see if there is any part I need to go back and focus on . Making it a habit to review materials daily helps with passing exams . Hailey Hiller , Student Valencia College , Orlando , FL
Print the syllabus and highlight exam dates , paper deadlines , and important reminders to stay on track . Fill out your planner for the WHOLE semester before class starts so that deadlines won ’ t creep up on you . Marshall Muehlbauer , Student Mount Mercy University , Cedar Rapids , IA
We ’ re using online video platforms , like Zoom , for class so why not use them for self-care too ? Take turns leading your peers in short exercises in things like diaphragmatic breathing , meditation , and guided imagery . Not only does engaging in these wellness modalities have proven benefits for your own health , but it also gives students a safe space to practice implementing these strategies with one another before using them in clinical settings with patients . Selena Roque , Student Malcolm X College , Chicago , IL
It is important to have a study routine . Use a calendar and reserve time to study . Use a calendar to schedule your exercise , your friend break , and important family time . Seeing that you are making time for all the things that are important to you will help to keep you motivated to study . Break the study hour into threes ; 20 minutes of content acquisition , 20 minutes of content review using NCLEX-style questions from your NCLEX apps / books , 20 minutes to care for yourself ( bio-break / aerobic exercise / yoga ). This pattern is sustainable and will support your long-term efforts . Marybeth Pavlik , Faculty Jefferson University College of Nursing , Philadelphia , PA
Nursing school is all consuming ; physically and emotionally . We are human first , and nursing student second . It is important to take the time to invest in yourself emotionally so you can succeed in school ! Whether that is individual therapy , journaling , a support group , mentorship program , or a hobby . We are special , drawn to this profession to help , but if we do not help ourselves first , we cannot reach our full helping potential . Be well friends ! Kristi Rigterink , Student Louisiana State University Health School of Nursing , New Orleans , LA
