Pakistan

Pakistan is the sixth most populous country in the world , yet it has the world ’ s second highest number of out-of-school children – the majority of whom are girls . To make matters worse , in 2020 and 2021 , COVID-19 led to a sharp increase in school dropout rates . An estimated 930,000 additional children are thought to have dropped out of primary and secondary school . With your support , CAI and its partners implemented innovative solutions to tackle these issues .
ALTERNATIVE LEARNING PATHWAYS
In 2021 , CAI invested heavily in providing access to alternative learning pathways , such as :
• An educational radio program that was broadcast to an estimated 200,000 people , allowing them to learn from home .
• A library van that traveled to remote villages to share lessons and books with 662 children who otherwise might not have had access to a school or who were falling behind in their lessons .
• Community-based schools , which allowed 3,478 students in mountain villages where there are no formal schools to access education – many of them for the first time .
TEACHER TRAINING AND SALARIES
To improve the quality of education in rural areas , 225 teachers received training to help them hone their skills . CAI also paid the salaries of 106 teachers in remote villages to ensure disadvantaged schools had quality instructors .
LIVELIHOOD OPPORTUNITIES
Last year , 155 women and men learned a new trade . CAI ’ s skill development program offered courses in masonry , sewing , and hospitality . After graduating from the program , many participants were thrilled to find higher-paying jobs in their new field .
