Afghanistan
The takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban in August 2021 dominated headlines for months . Yet , despite the regime change and the uncertainty that surrounded it , significant progress was made to advance education – especially for girls – in the war-torn nation .
COMMUNITY SCHOOLS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TEACHERS
EMERGENCY AID
In Kunar province , in communities without a government or private school , the literacy rate among young children was virtually 0 %. Thanks to the support of our generous donors , CAI was able to establish 15 community schools in Kunar , providing 452 students – 359 of whom were girls – with quality education . After several months of classes , the students were well on their way to mastering reading , writing , and numeracy .
It falls to teachers to educate the next generation of leaders and changemakers – something crucial to the success of any country . That ’ s why CAI awarded scholarships to 161 female teachers last year . The teachers selected were already working towards their bachelor ’ s degrees , but weren ’ t able to continue without financial support . You made it possible for CAI to support these ambitious women and pay their tuition in full . Of the 161 scholarship recipients , 85 have graduated and many of them have already found teaching jobs .
The Afghan people experienced untold horrors in 2021 as drought ravaged crops , conflict uprooted millions of people , and COVID continued to plague the country . Working with our local partners , CAI was able to respond quickly and get emergency aid to those who needed it most . We focused our efforts on helping women and children , especially poor displaced families . For more information on the type of aid that was provided , see “ Countries in crisis : How you stepped in to help .”
