People living in remote villages were thrown into crisis when the pandemic hit . They had limited access to information about COVID-19 and very few supplies with which to fight it . Food , personal protective equipment , and other essential items were hard to come by . Day laborers struggled as borders and businesses closed . At the same time , security continued to worsen .
