Colwell PDC Dog Rescue Program
Colwell Probation Detention Center ( PDC ) is well-known for its dog rescue and rehabilitation program , The Rescued Program . The program gives offenders a sense of purpose while training dogs , as they gain beneficial job skills that will assist them as they transition back into society .
When the pandemic began , the students in Group 30 were in the middle of completing their course-work . Rather than ending the class , staff immediately worked with the volunteers to transition to a virtual model . At the end of the program , the virtual class meetings had become the norm for the offenders and dogs . While the courses were a little different , students managed to successfully finish the virtual courses , rehabilitate dogs for new homes , learn lessons to prepare for life outside the facility , and graduate .
