Aggreko carried out a thorough analysis of the power requirements of the entire site and estimated a total of 8 MW would be needed . To meet this , it installed five LNG gas generators and two diesel generators . The new power station was fully commissioned in December 2020 , ready for processing to restart in January 2021 .
The project incorporates a virtual gas pipeline where the gas is trucked in 650 km to site – a world-first for Aggreko ’ s new gas technology . The power station is highly efficient , scalable as power demand grows and is also suitable for the introduction of solar power later , according to Aggreko
As well as providing reliable power to the entire site , the use of LNG gas generators will enable Ora Banda to reduce its CO 2 emissions by approximately 25,000 t during the initial five years of operation , compared with pure dieselpowered generation .
On a remote Indonesian island , meanwhile , Aggreko has recently provided two renewable technologies to hybridise BTR ’ s copper mine ’ s power requirements – introducing mobile solar PV panels with a battery energy storage system ( BESS ) while also upgrading its diesel power generation to a higher efficiency technology .

The BESS serves as spinning reserve displacement , which is conventionally supported by integrating extra power generators in the total generation mix , serving as redundancy .
And , thanks to the company ’ s ongoing engineering developments , Aggreko proposed a shift in the diesel technology from G3 to G16 to maximise operational efficiency for the mine . This upgrade gave BTR an efficiency improvement of 0.285 litre / kWh in terms of specific fuel consumption rates with use of B30 biodiesel fuel .
“ Supported by Aggreko ’ s proprietary Smart Energy Management System , the mobile hybrid solution will provide round-the-clock power supply to the mine ,” Aggreko said . “ Developed in-house , the innovative software is optimised for weak and off-grid energy applications to ensure maximum reliability and power quality . Power efficiency is further supported by the solution ’ s resilient design in a location prone to typhoons .”
Over the five-year contract duration , the mine is expected to save up to 4.6 million litres of fuel , as well as reduce carbon emissions by 12,340 t ; all while reducing the mine ’ s overall cost by more than $ 3.7 million , according to Aggreko .
Tackling fatigue risk management

Our somewhat unique challenge is the remoteness of our operation . Carmichael is more than a 160-km drive to Clermont , and more than 300 km from Queensland ’ s east coast .
“ So that means fatigue risk management and maximising quality of life for our workforce are top of mind when it comes to getting people to work and back home again safely and efficiently .
“ These news planes will do just that . Those of our team who can ’ t drive in from the Isaac Region will be at work or at home in about an hour . That means less of their R & R ( rest and relaxation ) lost to work-related travel , more time to spend with friends and family , and , hopefully , happier , safer and more productive workers .”
Facilitating the FIFO lifestyle
Another company looking to improve the conditions for FIFO workers is Swift Networks .
The company , which delivers network infrastructure , premium entertainment and communications to 60,000 rooms across Australia , recently signed agreements with OZ Minerals ( now owned by BHP ) and Mineral Resources Ltd .
