In Finland, further testing focused on well drilling in hard granite using 4 inch( 102 mm) H4 hammers. The Marathon hammers drilled beyond 300 m and showed 33-35 % longer wear life than standard versions.
“ The tests confirmed a more consistent wear pattern and improved durability, especially when used with specific top subs and bit configurations,” the company said.“ Plasma Transferred Arc( PTA) coated chucks also helped reduce casing wear – a common failure point in conventional designs.”
The H8 hammer has been tested with two different 229 mm drill bits to optimise the combined performance of hammer and bit for Kevitsa’ s conditions. This mine, located some 30 km north of Sodankylä in Finnish Lapland, exhibits significant rock hardness, with the way the impact energy bounces back from the rock different from what is encountered in other mines, Juha Ranta, Drilling Development Coordinator at Boliden Kevitsa, notes.
Flow control differentiator
Recently Sibanye-Stillwater’ s Keliber lithium project moved a step closer to production, with Valmet’ s flow control and automation solutions set to play an important role in the success of this project, according to Ville Mikkola, Project Manager, Valmet Flow Control business line.
A comprehensive product portfolio, availability of special materials and flexible delivery ensured that the customer received a complete solution for demanding process conditions, Mikkola explained.
Valmet’ s scope of delivery includes flow control solutions for various process stages at both the Keliber concentrator in Kaustinen and the Keliber lithium refinery in Kokkola, as well as the Valmet DNA automation system for both sites. These solutions support Sibanye-Stillwater’ s goal of producing lithium responsibly, Mikkola says.
The delivery also includes maintenance and spare parts services to ensure process reliability and continuity.
Sibanye-Stillwater’ s aim was to identify a partner capable of supplying valves for a wide range of applications, with Valmet’ s strengths including a broad product portfolio and complete solutions; availability of special materials for demanding processes, such as Super Duplex steels and ceramic ball valves; and comprehensive maintenance and spare parts services.
The deliveries include Neles™ series ball, segment, butterfly and globe valves for on-off and control applications, as well as Flowrox™ valves for slurry processes. Control valves are equipped with Neles ND9000 valve controllers, enabling performance monitoring and predictive maintenance, Mikkola said.
Valmet also provides a strong service network and comprehensive maintenance support close to the customer, which was key to winning this business.

The Valmet DNA automation system is the main automation platform at both the concentrator and the lithium refinery. It provides full visibility into plant operations and, according to Mikkonen, ensures high availability for critical functions.
The delivery also included the Valmet Machine Monitoring solution, which provides real-time vibration data on critical components. This enables predictive maintenance, improves process reliability and helps minimise unplanned downtime.
