SOUTH AFRICAN SUPPLIERS
industry where skills are highly mobile , and South African expertise is in global demand . We maintain our capacity to deliver by concerted and ongoing training – not just for our ranks but for clients and communities .”
This is where Murray & Roberts Cementation ’ s Training Academy at Bentley Park , near Carletonville , has been creating a pipeline of skills – from managers and supervisors through to operators and new entrants , according to Chamberlain . It has been generating a pool of qualified people in labour-sending areas , who can be employed as opportunities arise .
Taxation incentives for exploration companies , a streamlining of the licensing process and a reduction in red tape are obvious areas of improvement for South African business , Chamberlain says , however he also highlighted a long list of benefits to being South Africa-based and understanding how to navigate this business climate .
“ Our established presence , infrastructure and relationships have given us a strong foundation to work within and across our borders ,” he said . “ From physical attributes like maintenance , storage and training facilities to well established procurement and logistics systems , our footprint goes with a solid understanding of the sociopolitical environment . These barriers are often too high for new entrants , so we are a valuable joint venture partner too .”
P & C leading the paste conversation
Paterson & Cooke , started in South Africa in 1991 , has a global reputation for its expertise in slurry pipeline systems , tailings and mine waste handling , mine backfill , dredging and sub-sea systems , and mineral processing .
Paterson & Cooke ’ s Sudbury office recently hosted a hazard and operability workshop in Sudbury , Canada , for the new paste plant being built as part of Torex Gold Resources ’ Media Luna project , in Mexico . Those in attendance included staff from Torex Gold , Minera Media Luna , M3 Engineering & Technology , Stantec and Paterson & Cooke .
The workshop involved a rigorous review of the design and processes associated with the new facility to identify potential risks to the operation , the company said , noting that the workshop was successful and laid the groundwork for advancing the design of the paste plant in a collaborative manner with the project team .
The paste plant at Media Luna will be located

around 7.3 km south of the existing ELG Mine Complex . Blended tailings ( leached Fe-S concentrate and leached Fe-S tailings ) will be supplied to the paste plant at 50 % m solids (± 5 % m ) via a pipeline routed through the Guajes Tunnel and the underground mine workings . On initial start-up of the paste plant , the average blend will be approximately 1:2 ( leached Fe-S concentrate to leached Fe-S tailings ), with the plant operating as a continuous type backfill plant .
The underground mine at Media Luna has been designed for an average production
