Simplifying dust mitigation
Dust issues in bulk material handling are often seen as complex challenges, but effective dust control starts with understanding the basics of material flow and containment, GRT Rubber says.
By paying attention to how material moves, impacts and interacts with equipment, operations can significantly reduce airborne dust and improve workplace safety, equipment longevity and environmental performance – those who visit GRT Rubber’ s booth at CONEXPO will gain an understanding of this.
“ The key to dust mitigation is controlling the energy and air movement that cause dust to escape in the first place,” the company explains.“ When material travels through a chute or transfers from one point to another, velocity plays a major role. Reducing the speed – or‘ taking the energy out’ – helps minimise air displacement.
Lower velocity means material settles more quickly, leading to less dust generation and more effective sealing.”
Another critical step is extending the containment area, according to the company, with GRT Rubber’ s Canoe Liners, backed by Skirting Rubber, forming the foundation of a reliable dust sealing system. Even more advanced are Double and TripleLip-DustSeals, which provide multiple layers of protection by containing fine particles that would otherwise escape. By extending the canoe enclosure and giving dust time to settle, these systems create cleaner and more efficient material transfer, according to the company.
Tail areas are another common source of fugitive dust. When material hits the belt at the discharge point, air pressure often builds behind the chute, forcing dust-laden air backward and out into the atmosphere. Installing GRT TailSeals can make a significant difference in controlling this backflow of air, GRT Rubber says. A properly designed TailSeal closes the gap where pressure escapes, allowing the air to dissipate gradually while keeping dust contained.
However, even the best sealing and lining systems can lose effectiveness if the belt profile isn’ t correct.“ Belt sag in the impact area creates gaps that allow dust to escape – essentially defeating the purpose
