GROUND SUPPORT
Minova is currently developing a blasthole stabilisation system
planned for later in 2023 , in large underground mines in Europe , Australia and Canada . Vertically inclined blastholes of up to 60 m length have been installed with Minova ’ s new system . As with any major R & D process , Minova has to date
learnt several positive and negative learnings /
The solution permanently seals the blasthole creating a fully dry hole even in areas of dynamic water . This finding could lead to more costeffective explosives in the hole . The solution should also seal off the blasthole from the effects of oxygen pathways – which could in turn impact the viability of standard explosives in reactive
ores . The solution bridges voids and from preand post- treatment borehole filming , and results in a uniform and concentric blasthole , along the total length of the hole . It also results in a more uniform volume of explosive in the hole , providing likely higher repeatable of blast performance . Issues still to be resolved include removal of water standing in downholes , and dissipation of air during the installation procedure . Solutions in principle for both are to be tested in September / October 2023
Currently , Minova told IM it is aiming and is confident that their invention will be able to stabilise a full ring within a standard shift . Minova considers its invention applicable to both open pit and underground mines as well as the quarrying sector . Minova says it is applying for joint Canadian / German public innovation funding to accelerate the delivery of a mechanised , and more automated delivery system , applicable to mining operations . Several types of emulsion explosives have been tested for compatibility , and to date , the Minova solution has shown to be fully inert . Other laboratory testing including heat deflection , glass transition , environmental , strength and stiffness parameters are completed . Next steps include blasting a stabilised hole to examine the performance of the blast – this work is planned to be undertaken before the end of 2023 . Further updates will be provided on this research in due course .
