MINING TRUCKS
For the 100 t T 236 truck, the trolley project at
Erzberg iron ore mine in Austria is in development
with an operational date originally set for 2021,
while pre-series T 236 units are also known to
have been operating in South Africa at an iron ore
operation.
Volvo’s R100E extending reach
Back in April 2018, following Volvo’s acquisition of
Terex Trucks, the company launched the R100E – a
completely new rigid truck that was built using
Terex Trucks' longstanding rigid hauler expertise
and the technological strength of the Volvo Group.
IM recently spoke to Scott Pollock, Product
Management at Volvo Construction Equipment
about progress since then. In August that year the
first sales and shipments started and there are
now trucks working in South Africa, Russia,
Sweden, Norway and Finland. Collectively, the
R100E now has tens of thousands of working
hours with customers under its belt. Sales wise,
the truck is now sold through the main regional
Volvo sales teams to local Volvo dealers.
On to the operational question and Pollock said
that feedback has been really positive. On the
service side, maintenance teams like the access
spaces and space around key components, which
reflects a lot of work that went into methodically
positioning service areas. On the operator side,
drivers like the cab
space and visibility
plus the general ride
that reflects the new
suspension and
wheel base
configuration. Fuel
consumption
numbers have been
very good plus
productivity and
pulling force & good
load retention.
The main market
remains deep open
pit mines but also some larger quarries, as in the
Norway example which includes a downhill fully
laden haul of over 3 km. This experience has
allowed some fine tuning of the retardation
system.
Of course, compared to some machines in the
competitive 100 t class market, the R100E is not
among the lower cost machines. The TCO
argument is critical and the fuel consumption and
uptime numbers are crucial in making the case for
the R100E. The safety element and speed of
service are also big factors; getting the trucks
back to work much quicker than other truck types.
Lastly a note on emissions. The trucks to date

There are now a number of Volvo R100E trucks
operating at mining customer sites
have been Tier 2 models for less regulated
markets, but a pre-buy allowance ahead of Stage
V in Europe allowed the initial machines into the
European market. Now there is a Tier IV Final and
Stage V version ready, which will be launched at
MINExpo in September 2020 & will be a real boost
for sales in North America and Europe where Volvo
is already strong in premium ADTs. Also on the
smaller R60/R70 models inherited from Terex
Trucks, the D series of the trucks are updated
versions of the Terex Trucks range with improved
suspension, operator environment, HVAC etc but
