control equipment often based a long distance away.
It is vital to find equipment that’ s robust enough to the do the job at hand, and also reliable enough to ensure ongoing capital and operational savings for the site owners and operators.
AC drives can be found in mining sites in remote locations all around the world. They are designed to drive down costs by optimising processes, reducing maintenance needs, extending equipment lifetime and saving energy.
Built to last, the VLT ® AutomationDrive FC 302 from Danfoss is designed to be an ideal AC drive for the mining industry.“ It operates effectively and reliably even with the most demanding applications and in the most challenging environments. Its cutting-edge thermal design and unique back-channel cooling make this drive one of the most compact and cost-efficient drives in the market. And new intelligent maintenance features and a range of DrivePro ® services proactively improve productivity, performance and uptime.”
“ Taking full advantage of all that the new digital age has to offer, the versatile, reliable and consistently awesome VLT ® AutomationDrive completely fulfils the requirements of mining applications and optimises processes throughout the entire lifecycle.”
The sheer size of mining operations frequently means that cable lengths between drives and motors are long. Danfoss AC drives are designed to provide trouble-free operation with cable lengths up to at least 150 m for screened cables and 300 m for unscreened cables. As no additional output filters are required with these cable lengths, this saves space, installation time and costs compared to more traditional drive solutions.
For many years, Danfoss AC drives have been
operating reliably at the Kolomela iron ore mine in South Africa. They are installed on a mine dewatering system that distributes water to the plant operations as well as to the local town water supply. Iron ore mines are known to be particularly dusty environments, with particles down to a few microns in size. This dust is not compatible

with electronics. The traditional solution in the South African mining industry has been to install drives in an enclosed MCC substation for protection from mining contaminants. The closed, controlled air environment in the substation ensures the drives are kept cool and clean. However, to maintain the correct indoor temperature, the heat generated by the drives needs to be removed from the substation by an air conditioner.
The load on the air-conditioning system due to the heat loss from the drives and other equipment in the substation normally results in a relatively high consumption of power. Using the Danfoss back-channel cooling concept, air from outside the MCC substation is channelled through the floor of the substation, blown
