LINERS AND WEAR RESISTANCE_proof 23/08/2016 15:32 Page 4 LINERS AND WEAR RESISTANCE have become common place in order to protect chutes, hoppers and pipework. Solvent free and cold curing, these linings can be applied in situ without the need of specialist tools, which allows for safe and easy applications in confined spaces.” Kalenborn Abresist has introduced KALFIX®, Niclas Wechselberger, Technology and Development Manager at Combi Wear Parts. Lining pipes and more Belzona notes that chutes and hoppers are amongst the most heavily threatened pieces of equipment in the industry. “Much like conveyor belts, solid handling equipment is exposed to extensive erosion and abrasion from excavated materials of varying sizes. Not only that, but the impact, trajectory and volume with which some of the material is transported through the chutes and hoppers can have detrimental effects on their structure. This can often leave equipment affected by cracks, holes and wall thickness loss as a result of the intense abrasion, erosion, corrosion and impact. Hoppers can develop holes due to abrasion and impact, and metal plates can b e cold bonded over holed areas. Abrasion resistant linings can help protect chutes and hoppers and extend their service life. In terms of the repairs available for these types of equipment, they are two-fold, says Belzona, namely protection and prevention. “Initially, in order to return chutes and hoppers and other such apparatus back to service, it is necessary to fix holes and cracks. Historically, this has been done using hot-work to weld metal plates into place over the defect; however, this is being matched by the advent of cold-bonding practices which allow metal plates to be bonded onto the equipment using cold-curing, polymeric materials. Once the repair has been completed, providing protection of the main impact zones is crucial to preventing further damage. This can be achieved by an array of sacrificial barriers or linings, which help to absorb impact and abrasion from the mining materials. More recently, ceramic-filled abrasion resistant linings Trelleborg’s hoses are manufactured using superior rubber composition to deliver high quality and improved longevity. They are all fully tested and meet inspection requirements throughout the world 128 International Mining | SEPTEMBER 2016 a line of adhesives for pipeline coatings. KALFIX 911 and KALFIX 913 are pressure transfer fillers for repairing high pressure pipelines and offer extreme adhesion, even to underwater surfaces. KALFIX 563, for pipeline coating or cold weather use, is an epoxy and curing agent that is able to displace water for a permanent bond to all substrates with minimal substrate preparation. KALFIX 206 is a combination liquid epoxy resin and a special high temperature curing agent. Though it has a high heat distortion, it cures to a hard and dustfree condition at normal temperatures. Trelleborg’s engineered products operation is now manufacturing a unique, pre-bend rubber dredging hose in China. For the first time, Chinese dredging and mining operations will be able to take advantage of the superior wear resistance and flexibility that Trelleborg’s rubber dredging hoses provide, compared to their steel equivalents. All of Trelleborg’s pre-bend rubber dredging hoses manufactured in China will be reinforced with armoured rings. This unique design enhancement significantly strengthens the hose, extending life by up to five times compared to similar products, and is currently exclusive to Trelleborg’s Chinese manufacturing operation. It is also the only pre-bend rubber dredging hose available in China. Eddy Chen, Head of Asia Infrastructure Sales for Trelleborg’s engineered products operations, said: “New extraction projects are emerging in China that require new types of hoses capable of withstanding more extreme working conditions. We have applied our pioneering engineering expertise to create a superior rubber dredging hose that is reinforced with armoured rings to deliver a higher level of wear. Even when pumping highly abrasive media, this product guarantees a longer lifetime.” The hose is based on an existing rubber dredging hose manufactured in Europe, but has been redesigned to incorporate armoured rings and ceramic block that improve the hose’s longevity and reliability. Capable of transporting tough materials such as caprock, coral or other edged materials, the pre-shaped rubber bend can be used in a range of suction and discharge applications in various diameters and radii, including dredging pumps for abrasive slurries and loading line gravel dredgers. “Today’s mining industry is looking for innovative solutions that not only help optimise operations and maximise production, but also reduce operational costs and improve safety,” said Rick Bucher, Executive Vice President of Technology and Development for Victaulic. “Continually evolving to meet the needs of our customers and the demands of the industry, Victaulic has developed a number of innovative pipe-joining solutions designed for reliable, worry-free service under the most severe conditions imaginable while keeping pace with today’s technology.” Among Victualic’s extensive line of piping solutions, to be showcased at MINExpo are the Series 795 Knife Gate Valve and Refuse-toFuse™ HDPE pipeline system. The Series 795 Knife Gate Valve is reported to be “the
