Dear Reader:
Welcome to this edition of the Journal of Innovation. As Industrial IoT (IIoT) begins to transition
from hype to reality, we are seeing an emerging trend for new ways to design, build, deliver and
operate IIoT systems.
The key to these achievements is the daily innovation being brought to the fore by the system
architects, engineers, sensor manufacturers, equipment manufacturers and owner-operators,
software engineers and others who have made the fundamental paradigm shift from isolated
operational technology and information technology silos to robust internal partnerships.
In this issue, we focus on making the lives of citizens better. The concept of Smart Cities is just now
reaching fruition thanks to innovative thinking on the part of local and national governments in
partnership with the innovators who are bringing to market new ways of not only connecting OT
and IT, but new ways to use and share information within and across IIoT systems.
As you read through this edition, you will learn from the innovative concepts described herein:
• How public-private eco-systems can significantly simplify the challenges faced by the
public sector in realizing the promise of smart cities.
• Compelling arguments for thinking outside the box and aligning healthcare IIoT with
smart city IIoT initiatives to realize smart city health.
• Delve into the world of neuroscience and neuromarketing as part of new approaches to
IIoT retail solutions.
• Leading players in the Track and Trace Testbed describing how the testbed has matured
from an initial focus on aircraft manufacturing to one that now includes forklifts.
We are pleased to announce the September 2017 edition of this journal will focus on compute
deployment at the edge. We also welcome your feedback and your suggestions for future themes.
