Last third of the night
Remember the power and might of this portion of the night. Abu Hurairah
(RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:
Our Lord (glorified and exalted be He) descends each night to the earth’s sky
when there remains the final third of the night, and He says: Who is saying
a prayer to Me that I may answer it? Who is asking something of Me that I
may give it to him? Who is asking forgiveness of Me that I may forgive him?
It was related by al-Bukhari.
When your alarm clock goes off for suhoor, recite the du’a for waking up, then,
make wudu and pray two rakaat (or more units) of tahajjud. Leave yourself
some time to sit and ask Allah (SWT) for forgiveness and guidance.
Du’a
A believer wants nothing more than his/her du’a, to be accepted. Du’a is the
weapon of the believer; there is nothing else that can directly and regularly
shield, protect and arm us against the trials and tribulations of this life, like
du’a. Remember the Prophet’s (SAW) words:
“Du’a (supplication) is worship” [Abu Dawud]
And in another narration, he (SAW) said:
“The supplication is the essence of worship.” [Jami` at-Tirmidhi]
With the blessed days of Ramadan coming to an end, we must have an action
plan to capture these remaining invaluable moments and make as much du’a
as we can. Allah (SWT) is the All-Knowing and He (SWT) understands our
du’as that are made in absolutely any language.
However, by the mercy of Allah (SWT), we are blessed to have been given the
exact words we need to use within our du’as.
Du’as do not need to be elaborate in length. Aisha (RA) reported that the
Messenger of Allah (SAW) preferred du’as that were few in words and
comprehensive in meaning [Abu Dawud].
General tips
Make a list of du’as for everything you desire. This can be as long or short as you like. It is useful to
place these du’as under a few headings to make it easier for you to remember them.
Have a list of goals you want to achieve, even if they are small. Be sure to include your goals in your
du’a list so Allah (SWT) can help you be productive in achieving them.
Make a list of people who you would like to pray for specifically. For example a friend who has to do
surgery, a neighbor who just lost their job, your sister who is going through a difficult marriage etc.
We usually pray for our loved ones in a general manner, however this month and especially these
last days and nights you can ask Allah for specific things for our loved ones.
In Saheeh Muslim and Sunan Ibn Majah, it is narrated from Abu Darda that the Prophet (sallallahu
alaihi wa-sallam) said, ‘The Dua of a person for his Muslim brother in his absence will be answered.
At his head there is an angel, and every time he prays for him for something good, the angel who
has been appointed to be with him, says, ‘Ameen, may you have likewise.’
Etiquette of making du’a
If we want to maximize the impact and sincerity of our du’a, here are a few simple guidelines we
can follow:
