Fa am mal yateema

So as for the orphan, do not
oppress [him].
Allah is demanding something from us in this verse
and the following verses. He tells us ‘do not oppress the
orphan’. When we are sad, we often are consumed by our
own situation and constantly feel like we are in the worst
possible situation. This verse reminds us that there are
persons who are in far worse situations than ours, that
our current situation is a dream for some.
We have our family and loved ones surrounding us, the orphans have none of this and Allah
reminds us to be humble and kind to them. This is a demand from Allah (SWT) to never
overpower or oppress the orphans and those less fortunate than us. When revelation or messages
were given to the messenger (SAW) it is meant for all of mankind. This is the first message of
three issued in this Surah. This verse is the first of three demands that Allah makes, which were
preceded by three favours from Allah.
Demand number two is that we should never repel a
petitioner, meaning to never scold someone is seeking or
requesting. Allah reminds us here that if we are capable of
giving then Allah has blessed us with things that many do
not have.
Food, clothing and shelter are basic human needs that
we often take for granted. If someone asks then they are
in need, so do not humiliate them or repel them, instead,
appreciate the blessing that Allah has given you through
being able to help as well as the opportunity to gain
reward.
Wa am mas

And as for the petitioner, do
not repel [him].
Allah refers to ‘the petitioner’ not the poor, so the one who asks. This applies to anyone who
asks, here Allah is showing the Rasool (SAW) and mankind how to give the one who asks. Do
not humiliate, scold or repel him; which in turn can mean give with humility, acceptance and
compassion.
We should constantly remind ourselves of those less fortunate or have no other option but to
seek help. This helps us understand our blessings and causes us to be appreciative and grateful
which are emotions not synonymous with sadness.
Wa amma bi
ne’mati rabbika
fahad dith
But as for the favour of your
Lord, mention [it].
This verse demands that we mention the favours of our
Lord, constantly speaking about his favours, blessings and
mercies will help us appreciate what we have.
It will help us remain in a state of gratitude, it will help us
overcome any feelings of hopelessness and remorse when
we truly understand how much Allah has given us. `
It helps us maintain our bond with Allah (SWT) and helps us remain in a positive mindset
throughout our lives. Alhamdulillah! The word “ne’mati” depicts favours, softness, comfort,
basically blessings of Allah (SWT). Allah says mention them, mention the favours of your
Lord, mention your Deen because of the favours. If you were to put it in layman terms it would
translate to: “Don’t worry about anything, I’ve got it, just mention!”
So the next time you feel disconnected, disheartened or depressed with your level of Imaan and
your connection with Allah – read Surah Ad Duha and ponder over its meanings – Inshallah it
will restore your faith and increase your belief in the greatness of Allah
