What if this is my last
RAMADAAN
WRITTTEN BY: Amir Mohammed
What do you regret in life?
A missed opportunity? A conversation with a relative you
wish you had? A relationship you neglected? A career
choice?
Each of us, live with
many regrets and
disappointments,
things we wish we
did or achieved, but
no one knows except
us. Interestingly,
there is a website on
which persons share
these regrets – www.
secretregrets.com.
Here you can read
dozens of personal
thoughts and feelings
from persons who
are alive and live to
tell the tale of their
missed opportunities.
If we were to scour
the seemingly infinite
resource of the
internet for a website
sharing regrets from
deceased persons, we
would find no such
website. The dead
cannot share the
regrets of missed
opportunities.
A fact of 2020 – the
Ramadan of 2019
was the last one
that many in our
community saw.
We can think back
and remember
iftars, taraweeh, Eid
prayer and countless
moments with family
members, friends
and members of our
jamaats who are no
longer here with
us. The question
is though – how
many of the persons
who saw their last
Ramadan knew
that it was their
last Ramadan? The
most likely answer
is – none. The reality
is that no one ever
knows when is their
last Ramadan, their
last day, hour or even
breath. The reality
extends, therefore, to
each one of us – we
simply do not know
if this Ramadan of
2020 (1441) will be
our last. It very well
could be.
So the most important
question then is – What
if this is my last Ramadan,
what would I do
differently this year?
If we answer this
question with
sincerity, we will find
that the opportunities
for maximizing this
month are limitless,
and we can, with
Allah’s Mercy, leave
the month with little
regret at all.
This Ramadan is
a different one. It
is wrapped within
barriers of social
restrictions, which
will inadvertently
affect our normal
Ramadan dynamic.
No community iftars,
taraweeh at the
mosques and other
limitations will make
this Ramadan one
the likes of which
we have never
experienced before
and one that we will
be unlikely to forget.
Notwithstanding
this, however,
these adversities
bring opportunities
for creativity and
resourcefulness.
From these
circumstances,
many new ways
of achieving our
Ramadan goals can
be created, which in
the long run, may
remain as tools for us
to utilize.
How do we make
what is left of our
