REMODELLED AND MODERNIZED
T
he old high voltage laboratory
was a two-storied building which
contained mainly a high voltage
laboratory and had laboratories
allocated for Non-destruc ve Tes ng,
Sample Prepara on, Material lab and
Open Test Area. Also, a separate place
was allocated as an exhibi on area for
regular visitors to understand the
power genera on, transmission and
distribu on systems.
The main AC transformer that was
available in the lab was a 250kV, 15kVA AC transformer made by TOKYO TRANSFORMER Company Ltd. which was
used for flashover tests on high voltage apparatus. To facilitate chemical tes ng, a Transformer Dissolve Gas
Analyzer made by SHIMADSHU was used for analysis of dissolved gases in transformer oil. It included Rapid oven
cooling and a self-diagnos c func on to prevent failure and a gas-saver func on to save carrier gas consump on.
The modernized new lab is divided into seven tes ng areas to
conduct different tests independently. The divisions are; The Impulse
tes ng lab, AC tes ng lab, DC tes ng lab, PD tes ng lab, EMC lab, Insulator
Tes ng Area and the Clima c chamber. An open space is also used for AC
tes ng. For DC Tes ng Facili es, a 100 kV DC Generator is included in the
proposal. This facility will be used for DC tes ng with low leakage
measurements which may even contain fluctua ng line voltages with
reversible polarity. It should be ideal for field tes ng (compact and
lightweight). An EMC lab is proposed to be built with fully Aluminium side
walls, roof and floor. It can be used for tes ng purposes such as Electro-
Magne c tes ng and Electrosta c tes ng. As for non-destruc ve tes ng
facili es, a Frequency Domain Dielectric Spectroscopy (FDS) is allocated for
automated measurement and analysis of moisture content, tan
delta/power factor and oil conduc vity, including individual temperature
correc on (ITC) of tan delta/power factor and oil conduc vity, a Frequency
Response Analyzer (FRA) to detect transformer winding movements and
mechanical failures due to mechanical shock, transporta on or short
circuits, a Capacitance & Tan Delta Tester for capacitance, dissipa on/
power factor tes ng, a Combina on Wave Simulator to generate high
currents as lightening is a high current surge in which the surge voltage could
be up to 8kV and the surge current can be as high as 4kA, etc. There is also an
outdoor tes ng area which includes a Weather Sta on which can diagnose
the weather condi ons that may be important for high voltage tes ng, an
Insulator Aging System which is planned to be placed in the outdoor tes ng
area to provide exposure to air for aging.
