“Customized heat cure acrylic resin hollow vaginal
stent for treatment of vaginal agenesis : A Case Report”
Vaginal agenesis is a common anomaly of the female genital tract occurring due to the non
development of the mullerian duct. It can be present in isolated form or can be associated with other
systemic defects. Absence of vagina has a negative impact over reproductive, social and
psychological life of the patient.
Case Presentation
This case report explains about the surgical treatment of 13 year old female suffering from vaginal
agenesis using customized heat cure acrylic resin hollow vaginal stent to maintain the neovagina
being created by Mc-Indoe vaginoplasty.
Conclusion
Neovagina created using customized stent offers to be a relatively simple, easy and cost efficient
treatment option for vaginal agenesis. Heat cure acrylic resin is less irritating material and it is a
reliable option to be used in fabrication of surgical stent.
Key Words: Mullerian agenesis, Vaginoplasty, Vaginal stent
Introduction
Female reproductive system is a complex
system which becomes receptive to male germ
cells and also the host for new life. It is formed
from the paramesonephric ducts, commonly
called as Mullerian duct, during the embryonic
life of a female. The portions of the mullerian
duct which lie in the genital cord fuses to form
the uterus and vagina. [1] Vaginal agenesis is a
common anomaly which arises due to failure of
mullerian duct to develop. This anomalous non
development of the duct may results in
complete or variable agenesis of uterus and
[2,3]
vagina. Mullerian agenesis is a commonly
prevalent in 1 out of 4000 to 5000 females. [4]
Even though if some amount of uterus is formed
it is generally a blind sac. Absence of vagina
puts a great negative impact on the
reproductive, social and psychological life of the
patient.
Neovagina can be created surgically by
McIndoe Vaginoplasty operation. A vaginal
stent is often placed in the procedure to act as a
medium to carry split thickness skin graft and to
maintain the patency of the female reproductive
[5]
tract. Variety of materials can be used for the
fabrication of vaginal stent. This case report
presents with the surgical treatment of patient
suffering from vaginal agenesis using heat
[6,7]
cured acrylic resin vaginal stent.
Case Report
A 13 year old female patient reported to the
Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics
with the chief complaint of primary
amenorrhoea associated with the pain in lower
abdomen for past 2 weeks. On clinical
examination, the patient presented with normal
secondary sexual characters with normal
female appearance and a simple vaginal
depression ultrasound revealed the presence
of blind uterus sac but both the ovaries of
normal dimensions were present.
