It would be good to start with the ban
on alcohol sales to minors. All
establishments have a poster about it,
but none is complying with the
prohibition. Drinking alcohol in public
places and wandering late at night must
be
also
forbidden.
As
good
complements, centers for healthy
recreation should be opened at
affordable rates and the State should
allow the insertion of the Catholic
Church in the social spectrum. The
Church has been always helpful for
educating children and young people.
We know who can provide solutions to
issues quite ingrained —almost at
cellular level— in the vast majority of
Guantánamo’s youth. We know who
have resources available to effectively
address these issues. The citizens can
only call the attention and make
recommendations. And the truth is that
if nothing is done, there will come a
time when these issues will go out of
control.
We know how the relevant authorities
will react in such a case: with repression
and more repression. So far they are
only diverting the energy of the younger
generations to other channels to avoid a
sociopolitical upheaval.
