Everyday Nudity and Misapplied Artistic Policies: An Interview with Rody Enríquez Alonso
Marcia Cairo
Havana, Cuba
R
ody Enríquez Alonso is a young
photographer who explores unrelated themes in his visual
work. Two themes that predominate are
nudity and eroticism. He is also a plastic
artist and director of the Domingo Ravanet Gallery on Calle 51, corner of 161
(in La Lisa). In addition, he has earned
numerous national awards: the Sancti
Espíritus Premio Colateral del Centro
Provisional de Artes Plásticas y Diseño,
First Prize in the Full Body category of
the Casa Gaia Portrait Competition (in
Old Havana), as well as cash awards.
His personal exhibits have traveled to
the Information Sciences University
(UCI), the Teatro Principal in Sancti
Espíritus, the Cine Riviera, in Project 23,
as well as the Favad Jamis, Domingo
Ravanet, and Wilfredo Lam galleries.

photography, which is the instant kind

weight of my work is determined according to whatever title the piece of
work is given. I have studio shots, as
well as more conceptual, thought out
ones.
What are your influences?
Many. It’s hard to mention just two or
three, Andy Warhol and Hansel Adams
as are as landscape goes; Raúl Cañibano
and Rolando Pujol, in Cuban photography.
Why kind of photography do you prefer and what can you say about the
erotic photography you do?
It’s just like your kids: they all have their
unique characteristics, their positive and
negative aspects, things that allow you to
explore a specific thing; in some it’s
color, in others it’s the artistic or conceptual. I am interested in and satisfied with
it all.
When do you think you are going to
finish your nude series, and what has
been hard about doing it?
Let me see…beyond just particular
needs, materials, or logistics, all of
