Given this affirmation, the Atenas Occidental
club’s publication concurred and sustained the
myth of equality so as to be in perfect harmony
with prevailing ideas.10 This and other clubs defended their progressive values, e.g., that blacks
and mulattoes needed to be educated to become
the equals of white citizens and deserve respect.
In this sense, it would be interesting to establish a
parallel between the opinions of the Atenas Occidental and Hijos de Maceo concerning mulatto
Senator Martí Morúa Delgado.11
