there's no money to do it, but it is an obligation on the part
of the operator to do it. He stressed to look
decommissioning as a project. He said cost estimation,
scheduling, collection of data and analysis was important
before beginning the well P&A. He reiterated that
abandonment of wells was a big challenge.
S.Karunanithi, DGM (D), Structure section, IEOT, ONGC
touched upon five core areas; namely geotechnical
engineering, structural engineering, risk & reliability
engineering, materials & corrosion and alternate energy.
He noted about the developments and achievements of
IOET and several projects. He suggested the ways and
ideas for abandoning the old oil & gas wells, which had
lived their life cycle.
Juzer Nomanboy, Managing Director, IEV Malaysia
spoke about platform re-use. He believed that
decommissioning was a non-revenue generating
activity and it required to be made more elegant in
order to drive attention of the industry. He said that
re-use had great potential as it was a game changer
without any liability issues. He talked about different
structures, ways and analysis for re-using platforms
in the best possible way, which would save time, money
and resources. He also noted about the procedure of
testing the platforms using different techniques. “A lot of
times, when you think about reuse, it is more associated
with fit for purpose reasons & can be utilised at a new
location at the lowest cost possible without compromising
the integrity of the structure,” he added. He mentioned
that there was not a set formula to value a platform.
