CONFERENCE SUMMARY The inaugural India Decommissioning Conference having theme of the event was 'trends and challenges of decommissioning of oil fields' was held on 23rd May 2017, Mumbai, India. The conference was supported by ONGC, Shell & Jeji International. Several distinguished guests from the sector hailing from different nations assembled here to discuss the current developments & future prospects of the industry. The event witnessed participation from 70 delegates. The conference was inaugurated by C Tandi, Chairman of the conference & Executive Director, Head of IOGPT, ONGC & Arun Pushkarna, Director Operation, Vahana Offshore. Addressing the guests Mr. Tandi noted that the offshore decommissioning industry was in the state of infancy and it played a minor role in many operators' and vendors' business plan. “However, due to the increasing number of assets that are destined for decommissioning along with the increasingly stringent regulatory and environmental considerations relative to offshore operations, this is quickly becoming a business priority for offshore operations,” he said. Mr. Tandi seemed hopeful and added that decommissioning would grow in the coming years with game changing innovations. He pointed out key environmental issues in decommissioning, which included dealing with any potential direct affects on the marine eco-system and ensuring the appropriate use and contaminants of a hazardous substance and addressing waste management issues including sea bed debris. He stressed upon the necessity of industries integrating together for the better decommissioning, which could be an engine of growth for decades to come. He even vowed that the conference would pave the way towards improvement in the sector. Mr. Arun said that decommissioning was more than just a fancy stuff. He told that the decommissioning work requires skills to remove jackets, conductors & other subsea equipments from the sea.
