A Memorable Last Hunting Trip By-Daveri Ard

A Memorable Last Hunting Trip By-Daveri Ard

I got the opportunity to hunt last year with my 81 year old grandfather Merrill Dougal as it was going to be his last year hunting .
We had both drawn the unit 39 Mule Deer tag and we had planned this hunting trip for weeks .
We headed out of town and got to camp late . We had met up with two other friends that had drawn the tag as well . The next morning , we glassed a hillside for about an hour , when I asked my grandpa to go back on the other side of the hill because I had a good feeling . As we headed back towards camp , we came around a draw when I looked over and said ‘ Grandpa DEER '!
He stopped the four wheeler and we saw two bucks standing there in velvet . One of the bucks got spooked and headed out of the draw , and we no longer had a clean shot . The second buck jumped right in front of us . It was a 40 yard shot mid-air . I took the shot . I sat for a few moments and ran up the hillside .
Dragging the buck down-hill , grandpa and I lifted the buck on the back of the four wheeler . It took a couple tries as he was heavy and wet . When we got back to camp , even though it was pitch black , we knew we still had a big job of field dressing him . Exhausted , we finally headed to bed .
Woke up the next morning to a bitter cold and frost , we could see our breath . After breakfast , we went back past our first spot and there again were two beautiful bucks . Grandpa took his shot while our hunting partner shot the other . We were lucky enough to tag three bucks in less than 10 hours .
This is a memory I will always cherish and never forget , I got to spend my grandfather ’ s last hunting season with him and it was the best for us both !
