INTERVIEW
WITH KINDEGARTEN
CARINA FARIA
ISSUE 7
TEACHER
by Joana Costa, Intern at USJ's ICO
What do you currently do?
I teach Portuguese as a second language to kindergarten children in a Luso-Chinese school
in Macau.
What made you choose to be a Kindergarten teacher?
Kindergarten teaching has always greatly interested me. Even as a teen, while still studying,
I worked as an assistant at a pediatrician clinic and there got closely involved in the world
of children and it physically and psychologically captivated me.
During that experience, I learned that we need to dedicate ourselves to the fullest in
everything we do and that our decisions, in this case the ones related to our professional
journey, only really benefit us if we absolutely live everything firsthand. Throughout my
development, I have always had part-times. Currently I lecture a Portuguese workshop for
children and, as I said previously, I worked at a pediatrician clinic for several years, but I
have also worked at a library, at a retirement home, in the real estate sector, in sales, and
others.
How did you get to where you are now? Can you please tell us more about your studies and
work experience.
My background is in Early Childhood Education. Only later did I do a post-graduate course
in teaching Portuguese as a Second Language, among other workshops throughout the
years, like first aid, sign language, and facilitator training.
Initially, teaching kindergarten children
had been my only choice but, as time
passed, I began to understand that we
must broaden our education and
experience as people should be more
open to change in today's world of work.
Macau was a great surprise in that
regard, it marked the start of the new
experience of teaching Portuguese as a
second language. Change is always
motivating and I believe it nurtures new
horizons and perspectives.
