David Tuckett – 5 minute interview
Earlier this year we welcomed David Tuckett to
our Board of Trustees. Find out more about David
in our five-minute interview.
Why did you apply to join LWPT as a
Trustee?
The straight answer is that I didn’t apply! The
Articles of Association of LWPT state that the
Trustees shall include one person appointed by
the Methodist Council and one by the Wesleyan Reform Union (WRU). I’m a member of the General
Committee of the WRU, because I’m the Secretary of our denomination’s Local Preachers’ Fellowship
– so in 2019 I was asked to be a Trustee and agreed.
What is most important to you about being a Christian?
In my early years as a Christian, I would have said “knowing I’m saved and I will go to heaven”.
Now, alongside that belief, it’s thanksgiving for what my life is like as a result and wanting to help
other people to know Jesus.
Which is your favourite book of the Bible and why?
I was musing the other day about what is my favourite vegetable when my wife told me gently that
I didn’t really need to have a favourite! I think the Bible is a bit like that, so I’m ducking this question.
At the top of my list would be John’s Gospel and 1 John which explain so well who Jesus is and
what He means to us. Then it’s probably Genesis for its huge scope of the creation, the fall, and God’s
patient wooing back of mankind in the lives of Abraham and the patriarchs. But there are so many
other books on my list!
What do you think is the most pressing issue facing Christianity in the
UK today?
We are facing a long and deep recession which will bring poverty and inequality at levels we
haven’t seen in our lifetimes. Christians will need to address this by reaching out to people living in a
spiritual and material vacuum.
How do you think Christianity can benefit the UK in these troubled
times?
Many people are losing hope – maybe they can see no end to the pandemic and its effects. The
church is there offering hope in someone bigger than themselves who takes a longer view of what is
happening – and also giving practical help through foodbanks and online resources.
What are your hobbies?
Motorcycling, cycling and walking, and building a model railway in my attic.
