High tech hives at ACE orchard

FOR the first time beehives at the Almond Centre of Excellence( ACE) have been fitted with sensors, cameras, and scales as part of a commercial research trial. Beestar is examining bee colony foraging activity under commercial almond bloom conditions. The company is aiming to establish a scientifically defensible and commercially meaningful basis for assessing pollination performance. The instruments were added to 80 hives on August 5, and focus on a third of the orchard’ s drop points, while a weather station is also monitoring conditions on the orchard. The ACE orchard staff have access to daily activity summaries and a monitoring dashboard during bloom. Trial findings will be presented at the Australian Almond Conference on October 14.
