RWE commissions 14-MW electrolyzer plant in Lingen , Germany German utility RWE has commissioned its pilot electrolyzer plant in Lingen , Germany . The facility , located at RWE ’ s Emsland gasfired power plant site , has a capacity of 14 MW and can generate up to 270 kilograms of green hydrogen per hour using renewable electricity . Featuring two different electrolysis technologies , the pilot plant is expected to provide valuable insights for developing future industrialscale hydrogen facilities . The first large commercial electrolyzer plant is already being built just meters away . As part of the GET H2 Nukleus project , a 100- MW electrolyzer is set to be commissioned there by 2025 , with plans to expand its capacity to 300 MW by 2027 .
Industry Update
The pilot electrolyzer consists of two subsystems : a 10 MW alkaline electrolyzer from Sunfire and a 4 MW plant designed and built by Linde , using a PEM electrolyzer from ITM Power . Initially , the hydrogen produced in the pilot plant will be added to the fuel for the power plant ’ s Unit D gas turbine as part of a comprehensive test program at the site . From mid-2025 , it will also be possible to fill hydrogen-powered vehicles with hydrogen from the pilot plant at the Emsland gas-fired power plant . Construction work for a hydrogen filling station and a trailer filling facility for hydrogen has already commenced .
bp takes FID on green hydrogen project at Castellon refinery in Spain In its presentation of results for Q2 2024 , bp has announced a final investment decision to develop and produce industrial-scale green hydrogen at its Castellon refinery in Spain . The project could see the development of up to 2 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030 .
Hydrogen production at the Castellon refinery is to be developed in phases . The first phase , anticipated to be operational in 2027 , will involve the installation of an electrolysis plant with at least 200 MW capacity . In the second phase , which could be completed in 2030 , the electrolysis plant would be expanded to reach a capacity of up to 2 GW of net installed power .
Green hydrogen will support decarbonization of the refinery ’ s operations , replacing its current use of ‘ grey ’ hydrogen generated from natural gas . Its production of biofuels is expected to increase threefold , to 650,000 tonnes a year by 2030 . Green hydrogen will also be used as a feedstock in biofuel production , specifically of sustainable aviation fuel ( SAF ).
In addition to being used by bp at the refinery , the green hydrogen produced will also be used in key hard-to-abate industries in the Valencia region , such as the ceramic industry , replacing the natural gas used in their processes , chemical industries for the production of green ammonia and in heavy transport .
