I
magine, one moment you are having breakfast
in your home when suddenly, you nd yourself
in the middle of a blizzard with no escape from
the biting cold, and no idea where you were in time.
Henry DeTamble didn’t have to imagine, this was
his life, running like a broken tape-recorder, from
present to past to the future. e Time Traveler’s
wife is a brilliant piece of literature following the
lives of Henry and Clare Abshire, the titular
character, who rst met him when she was 6 and he
was 36. e book progresses with its awlessly
executed non-linear timeline to let the reader
experience Henry’s fragmented life as he tries,
with Clare’s help, to live normally despite temporal
chaos. Clare has known Henry her whole life, and
of course she loves him and Henry, well he already
has loved Clare in the future, so he will love her in
the present. As confusing as all that sounds, their
relationship is unconventional to say the least, but
it feels unbelievably real and honest. ey fall in
love and grow to become the people they knew the
other to be. is book has been my favourite
standalone novel of all time, basically because it is
nothing short of perfect, with a brilliant plot and
narrative. Yet what really sets it apart is the
wonderfully rare experience of reading every page
that stays with you forever.
