What is challenging about teaching in Junior High in Huntsville , TX ? What don ’ t people in the community know about what it takes to overcome local challenges ?
The biggest challenge is student engagement . I hate to mention COVID-19 , but kids missed out on social interaction and valuing education for two years . The academic gap was pushed even further . Teachers at my campus collaborate and spend hours each week trying to create engaging lessons to meet the needs of all students . However , It is challenging to get students engaged at school when education is not valued or a priority at home .
What blesses and inspires you to come back to teaching each year , when so many others fall off the wagon ?
My students bless me to come back each year . I feel like I am making a difference by positively impacting their lives . I tell them " I been in your shoes and walked these hallways , you will make it just like I did ". I get to share moments with my students that they will value forever with FCCLA . For example , I took a few students to the State Fair in Dallas for Ag Awareness . We were all excited because it was everyone ' s first time going to the state fair , and three students first field trip ever . I enjoy creating memories and moments with all of my students . I got into teaching because of a handful of amazing teachers : Linda Bone , Lisa Burns , Tersea Ruiz , and Samantha Herrington , created core memories and moments in and outside of the classroom with me . I want to be what they were for me to my students and future students .
Describe the team that helps you excel .
As an CTE elective teacher , I am the only FCS teacher on my campus . I don ' t have anyone to collaborate with , but the CTE team on my campus is supportive . Coach Joiner and Mrs . Raylynn Davis has been supportive by listening to ideas and helping bring them to reality . I often talk to them to plan lessons or community service opportunities that I want to involve my student organization FCCLA in . The leadership team has helped me excel by allowing me freedom in and outside of the classroom . Principal Campbell has been supportive of every idea that involves giving students an opportunity to learn outside of the classroom .
