Jeremy Nellum Citizen of the Year
When you describe him , it ’ s not hard to recognize who he is and why Jeremy was nominated and selected as our Citizen of the Year . To simply describe him , every time you see him , he will greet you with a warm smile , a heart-felt greeting and a sincere willingness to help his fellow man . Most days , you can find Jeremy doing what he absolutely loves , assisting his beloved customers at our hometown HEB .
Beyond the smile and being a dedicated hard-worker , Jeremy Nellums is a husband , father , son and brother . He was born and raised in a single parent household 400 miles north of New Orleans , Louisiana in a small town with less than 1,200 residents . Seeking better opportunities , his mom relocated their family to Houston , Texas when he was in his early teens . Jeremy attended middle and high school in Southwest Houston and thrived in basketball and football .
After graduating from Alief-Hastings High School in 2007 , Jeremy followed in one his older brother ’ s footstep and joined the United States Army . Most of his service time was spent in the San Antonio area . His fondest memory of this time was getting the chance to be close to his brother , he states “ we weren ’ t raised up together as small children but thanks to the Army , we got a chance to grow together as Men .” In addition to serving in the Army , they both played semi-professional football for San Antonio Phoenix .
