Renee Spivey helps women get a second chance at life

STORY BY MIKAH BOYD

Renee Spivey has been fulfilling her calling to service through leading the non-profit , Women of Worth .

The agency offers programs like financial literacy and adult literacy as well as the High School Equivalency Test and eventually the GED , to provide an alternative to a high school diploma .
Spivey had the idea for Women of Worth for over 20-years , and had to overcome the fear of stigma around her past as an ex-offender . She knew that even though it has been over 25 years since her mistake and she has gotten a college education , people still would carry judgement .
“ I want to help people like me ; people in society frowns upon because they made a bad decision ,” Spivey said . “ I am a firm believer that making bad choices does not necessarily mean you are a bad person . I believe in second chances .”
The second chance that she provides has allowed women to feel empowered to achieve their goals , which gives her joy that she says is indescribable .
To continue to do this , Spivey needs help from the community for equivalency test and soon to be GED testing center as well as help in making online educational support more readily available .
