The same lessons taught to Lunsford during his first job at an auto parts store are the same lessons that he teaches to his officers .
“ Working in an auto parts store is 100 % about customer service , and that ’ s the biggest base of police work ,” he said . “ It ’ s important that we have a great relationship with the community , and the biggest challenge is to maintain that . You watch the national media and you see what ’ s going on , so that makes it even more important for us to have that positive relationship with the community .”
Lunsford noted that community support has grown in Huntsville since the tragic death of George Floyd in Minnesota captured the attention of a nation .
“ Instead of us going out to pump up the community , they have come to us and built us up , which is very encouraging .”
He hopes the support will continue , as his department moves into a state-of-the-art 40,000 square-foot facility next year .
The new headquarters , at the corner of Rosenwall Road and FM 2821 , will feature training facilities and nearly triple the office and evidence storage space .
“ When you build a new facility you build it for the next 30 years or more ,” Lunsford said . “ We hope that this new facility will give us an opportunity to grow and expand , and serve this community for generations to come .”
