Gone in the Gulf
Off the coast of Louisiana, Island de Jean
Charles — a main setting of Beasts of the
Southern Wild— is disappearing into the
Gulf of Mexico. Levees built in the 1960s
along the Mississippi River disrupt the
marshland and allow the Gulf’s salt water
to eat away at its shores. The island is
one-fourth the size it was when its oldest
residents were children, and recent
threats such as the Deepwater Horizon
oil spill continue to expedite erosion.
