Venezuela announced seven days of mourning for Hugo Chavez,
who led the country for 14 years and died of a heart attack this
week after a long battle with cancer. VP Nicolas Maduro, whom
Chavez named as his preferred successor, will run the country
until an election is called. When he announced Chavez’s death,
Maduro said, “In our hearts there should only be one sentiment:
Love. Love, peace and discipline.” It’s unclear if relations will
improve between the U.S. and Venezuela. Maduro expelled a U.S.
attache on Tuesday, alleging the U.S. was trying to destabilize the
country, and said “the historical enemies of our homeland” had
given Chavez cancer, a claim a U.S. spokesman called “absurd.”
