BABY PANDA DIES AT NATIONAL ZOO
A newborn giant panda cub died Sunday at the National Zoo just
six days after it was born. The cub’s mother, Mei Xiang, honked in
distress just before zoo officials learned of the sad news. “This is
devastating for all of us here,” National Zoo director Dennis Kelly
told reporters. “It’s hard to describe how much passion and energy
and thought and care has gone into this.” The cub had been just
the size of a stick of butter and was not yet named. Its birth was a
surprise after Mei Xiang suffered five failed pregnancies.
BILL CLINTON
URGES
MUSLIMS
TO JOIN
THE 21ST
CENTURY
Former President Bill Clinton told the Islamic world
that the violence that spread across the Middle East
in response to a film trailer that “nobody in authority
knew anything about” has no place in an increasingly
diverse and connected world. “You cannot live in a
shame-based world. You won’t make it in the 21st
century,” Clinton said on CBS This Morning. He
added that followers of Islam must be able to tell
themselves, “‘I believe in a god and a prophet strong
enough to withstand the criticisms of petty, narrowminded, mean-spirited people.’”
OLYMPIAN REVEALS
SHE WAS PREGNANT DURING
LONDON GAMES
Kerri Walsh Jennings brought home Olympic gold with
her beach volleyball teammate, Misty May-Treanor—
and she was pregnant while she was competing. “When
I was throwing my body around fearlessly and going
for gold for our country, I was pregnant,” she told Matt
Lauer on Today. Walsh Jennings, who has two young
sons, said she didn’t notice signs of pregnancy until
she got to the Olympics. “At some point, you’re late and
then you start feeling something, and I definitely started
feeling something in London,” she said.
