Page 2 Responsible or Not By: Paul Palacios A credit card is a pathway to independence, but with independence comes responsibility. The majority of young people lack responsibility and tend to spend money foolishly. Credit cards are a responsibility that you take on in your life as you mature into adulthood. As young adults we have many tests in life whether it’s taking care of a pet or maintaining a credit card. If we pass these tests it shows that we can handle responsibility. The interest rate on each credit card varies, but the responsibility that comes with it doesn't. If you aren't responsible and don't pay your bills on time you will face late fees that could hurt you economically and hurt your credit score. For example, the Chase Freedom credit card has an interest rate of 13.9922.99 percent and a zero dollar annual fee; whereas according to www.creditkarma.com the credit card with the lowest interest rate is Discover It, with an interest rate of 10.99% to 22.99%. Card holders also receive five percent cashback in categories like travel, gas, and groceries. An advantage that the Discover It credit card has is that it has no annual fee, over limit fee, or foreign transaction fee. The only thing that could affect you getting the credit card is having bad credit. Your credit can't just be average, it has to be excellent. Not being responsible for your charges will hurt your credit score which in turn will hinder your chances of purchasing a vehicle which at a high school age everyone wants. The main characteristic that credit card companies look at is your credit and how you have maintained it throughout the years, so applying for a credit card isn't an easy deed. If you plan on getting a credit card you should really be careful and read all the details that the credit cards offer. Credit cards should be given to young adults, if they demonstrate responsibility to their parents. A credit card is a privilege, therefore you should think twice before you opt to pick one up.
