Frank Lyons looks for grip
from ear to ear as he flew out of the top of section 6 .
For the second round the sections were altered and HSCC racers Chris Atkinson , Westie and Sam Mitchell all managed low scoring laps .
Under these very difficult conditions Isabelle Bamberg had her first drive in a trials car , double entering with Tim Kary in his Imhof . To her credit she won the Best Lady Award .
Also new to trials was Holly Brogan who double passengered for Sam and Westie Mitchell . She thoroughly deserved to win the Spirit of the Event award .
It was a difficult trial and both classes were won by very experienced modern sporting trial competitors who between them have won the MSA and MSUK Sporting Trial Championships . This was a day where there was no substitute for experience .
Dick Dixon confirmed it was muddy !
NEWS ROUND-UP
The last few months have been busy in the historic sporting trials world with the Ron Faulkner Trial in April , the MTCC Long Compton Trial in May , the Inaugural Heritage Trial in early July , the new Northern Historic Trial in late July and the HSCC Plashes Farm Trial in early August . All were very successful , but Motorsport UK Covid rules did not permit us to have spectators until the last trial . This was a great shame but hopefully for the rest of this year ’ s season spectators will be more than welcome .
Northern Historic Sporting Trial - Penrith - 25th July 2021 This went off exceedingly well but suffered from a shortage of our usual competitors . Much of this was due to our racers being involved the following weekend with the four-day Silverstone Classic and others being on holiday . The Northern Phoenix Sporting Trials Club are one of the most experienced organisers in the country and they want to run the trial again next year , may be at a different time .
Tyre pressures One of the highlights of the Northern Trial was John Fack in his Historic class Cannon going round without losing a mark beating Simon Kingsley in his Post Historic Kincraft by one mark for the lowest score of the day . This was a bone-dry trial . In the HSCC Trial Simon Kingsley dropped three marks to John Fack ’ s five in very wet conditions .
Two trials in very different conditions but in both cases the Historic class were on 5psi while the Post Historic were on 10psi . The scores were very close which confirms using a ‘ standard ’ tyre pressure for each class works in most types of conditions .
HSTA 10th Anniversary Trial 2022 We cannot believe it , but our first trial was held 10 years ago on 12 May 2012 at Long Compton . We are looking at suitable ways of marking this milestone next year .

Future Heritage Sporting Trials Following the success of the inaugural Heritage Sporting Trial in July , work is well under way for a proposed Heritage Sporting Trial in the Petersfield area of Hampshire .
It will start and finish in a friendly pub and will include non-damaging highway sections as well as sections on private land all within a short road mileage .
I have also been asked to look at sections that may be suitable for our cherished cars in the Shropshire area .
Further details to follow but for those rebuilding Dellows or similar the prospect of having trials in which you can use your car without having to undertake major modifications is improving all the time .
