That was a trial – that was !

48 entries were received for the eighth HSCC Historic Sporting Trial held on Saturday 7 August 2021 at Frank Lyons ’ farm near Ware in Hertfordshire . Martyn Halliday reports .
Normally at this time of the year the ground is very dry but not this year . When the sections were set out conditions were perfect but then it rained and rained . The Clerk of the Course , Ian Wright , altered the sections as best he could but this became a very challenging trial . In most unpleasant conditions competitors set off on the two-mile course which included six observed sections . The intention was to undertake two laps before a lunch break and then one round after lunch . Although the rain stopped , progress was very slow with cars becoming stuck and taking time to be extracted from the mire .
It became clear that the original objective of three laps was no longer feasible and a sensible decision was taken to call a halt to the proceedings after two laps . This came as a profound relief to most of the by now , very tired competitors . The irony was the sun had come out and most enjoyed an impromptu picnic in the paddock area .
On the first lap the final climb on the wet bracken of section 3 caught most people for three marks including Dick Dixon , Neil Davis , Tim Barrington and Frank Lyons as well as the Post Historic class winner Simon Kingsley . The only clears were achieved by Dave Oliver and Richard Rowe in Post Historic and by the eventual Historic class winner John Fack . Only these competitors and Stuart Beare kept their first lap totals in single figures . Jonathan Lewis was grinning
