Dwyer ran the Trojan at Donington Park

Dwyer brings Scheckter Trojan back into action

Mark Dwyer brought the ex-Jody Scheckter Trojan T101 Formula 5000 back to the grid recently at Donington Park for the Derek Bell Trophy races . The T101 is the car raced by the South African in the UK and North America in 1973 but not the car recently sold as part of the Scheckter collection . Dwyer ’ s car later went through various hands before spending time as a bare tub with Anthony Taylor . It was then raced sporadically by Lancastrian Michael Sidgwick , who took it to race in New Zealand , and Dwyer acquired it from Sidgwick a few weeks ago . The car is back in period Schecker livery as run by the Sid Taylor team in 1973 .
When Dwyer recently sold his F5000 Lola T400 to a UK-based American , he looked around for a car to use when the group of New Zealand F5000 drivers come to the UK this summer for races here at Brands Hatch and at the Oulton Park Gold Cup .
“ I first saw the car in New Zealand ,” said Dwyer . “ It was restored by Peter Denty in the late 1990s . We put new oil and fuel in it and we just treated Donington as a test .”

Lane returns to racing after heart operation

Veteran racer Mike Lane has returned to racing this season in his Formula Atlantic Chevron B49 after an 18-month break for a heart operation . Lane , who first raced in 1973 and is now 72-years old , felt unwell in his last race at Donington Park in 2022 and subsequently needed heart surgery and had a pacemaker fitted . He even took his HANS device into the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford so that the surgeon could see where best to fit the pacemaker .
“ Getting my licence back was a massive deal ,” said Lane , who has worked hard to regain fitness and be ready to race again . “ The medics at the hospital were wonderful and fully supported me getting fit to go racing again ,” said Lane .
The Nottingham driver briefly held the Donington Park outright lap record from racing a Mallock in the Clubmans race at the first race meeting when the circuit re-opened in 1977 . He later suffered a major accident at the same track , breaking 23 bones in total .
