FEATURE : NEW ON THE BOARD

Newcomers to the HSCC board

The Club has recently welcomed some new members to the Board of the HSCC . While they will be familiar within their own race series , the four newcomers may not be as well known across the rest of the Club so we asked them for some words of introduction .
Ted Pearson ( Historic Formula Ford )
“ I am a 53-year-old motor racing fanatic who caught the bug watching the first lap melee at Woodcote during the 1973 British Grand Prix . I ’ ve been hooked ever since !
“ I got my first karting licence in 1981 and raced 100cc non-geared and
125 geared karts with varied success but always having great fun . In 1989 I started to race Alfa Romeos and enjoyed some success , winning three class championships and two overall championships in the early 1990s and continued racing Alfas on and off until 2001 .
“ After a few years off due to family and business I returned to racing in
2013 in the Classic Ferrari Challenge . In 2014 I bought a Classic Formula Ford Crossle and raced it that year , 2015 and 2016 in the BARC championship which has since joined the HSCC .
“ In 2018 I bought my yellow Merlyn which I have raced in the HSCC Historic Formula Ford Championship ever since . I occasionally get to race my old Alfas in various classic championships usually with some success – in the last six outings I ’ ve had three wins and a second . My 17-year-old son Tom had his first ever race in 2020 and hopes to do some more this year in either what is now ‘ our ’ Merlyn or in a 1988 Van Diemen .”

Hugh Colman ( Guards Trophy )
“ I grew up in the 1950s with green Jaguars winning at Le Mans and green Vanwalls winning in F1 . My Scalextric set had two Lotus 16s and I was hooked !
“ Initially , I did sprints and hillclimbs in my road cars . Circuit racing followed from 1974 in a Modsports MG Midget followed by a Ginetta G4 for Modsports
and the Donington GT Championship .
“ Subsequently I spent many years racing a road specification Midget with the MG Car Club . But I had always lusted after a Chevron B8 , having seen them as a spectator in the late 1960s at Silverstone ’ s international meetings . I saw one at an auction in the late 1970s for a rolling chassis and gearbox for £ 500 , sadly I only had £ 50 for a set of wheels for the Ginetta G4 !
“ In 2001 I was lucky enough to find a B8 in a lock up garage in North London ; I have raced it in HSCC RJB , Orwell Supersports Cup , Masters Sports Cars and Guards Trophy and for the last few years have shared it with my too fast sons Mark and Charlie .
“ Recently I have acquired and rebuilt an FIA MG and hopefully the three of us will do the Spa Six Hour . We also use it for CSCC Classic K and Spa 3 Hour but presently logistics prevent it coming to Guards races with the Chevron . Car racing is a hobby , I self-prepare and get a huge amount of enjoyment from being able to compete with and beat the semi pros and pros !
“ I am an engineer by training and spent most of my working life as a Management and Business Consultant working all over the planet in industry , commerce and the military . I have been very fortunate to work with many really interesting clients but am now retired , I think !”
