Rogers defines four phases in the level of psychological contact:
1. Being able to communicate about external subjects, without
personal involvement
2. Gradually becoming more and more involved and being able
to communicate

3. Being able to communicate from a personal referential frame
and express gradually always more thoughts and feelings
which were suppressed or censured at the start
4. A shift takes place from values borrowed from the external
world to proper values of coachee.
Empiric focusing
Empiric focusing helps the coach to understand and cope with
coachee’s emotions and causes moments of far reaching
emotional change.
